Freezer Burn: Oxymorons and Other Contradictions of Everyday Life
Published in Paperback by Ballantine Books (Trd Pap) (March, 1991)
Average review score:

These are not regular morons, these are OXYmoronsMy only problem with this book is that it is too short. The late Jeff MacNelly was always my favorite editorial cartoonist ever since I went off to college and taped his work to the door of my dorm room. In "Freezer Burn: Oxymorons and Other Contradictions of Everyday Life" he has been enlisted by Laine Vilensky and David Holmes to bring from Civil War to Martial Bliss to live as black & white ink drawings. My favorites were Rap Music, Great Depression, Educational Television, Gourmet Pizza, and Nuclear Safety. As it explains on the back cover "Thanks to these hilarious cartoons, you will never again misunderstand the meaning of these silly contradictions used in everyday language and life." It take a couple of minutes to whip through this book, but you will be smiling for those few precious minutes. Too bad there is not a desk calendar like this, because 365 oxymoronic cartoons sounds like a nice way of making it through the year.

This was freakin' hilarious!!!The characters in this book are too much! Collen must be a babe. And the angels remind me of Secret service agents from heaven, were they wearing sunglasses, I forget. I wish more writers could catch me off guard like these guys.

God of Grace and God of Glory: An Account of the Theology of Jonathan Edwards
Published in Hardcover by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. (15 April, 2001)
Average review score:

A competent and insightful bookStephen R. Holmes demonstrates a comprehensive and competent knowledge of Jonathan Edwards' theology. Holmes examines the influence of the Enlightenment and men such as Locke and Newton as well as giving attention to Edwards' firm place in the Purtian and Reformed traditions of the church. He also demonstrates a thorough knowledge of everything Edwards penned; from the musings in Edwards' miscellanies to his published arguments in the Freedom of the Will,Original Sin and others. For Holmes, the center of Edwards' thought is on God's glory and how everything in Trinitarian relations and creation serves it.
Edwards seeks to describe everthing in a way that gives glory to God. Holmes finds many of Edwards' arguments compelling but believes Edwards' understanding of election, hell and punishment do not contribute to the overall scheme of God's glory.

Golden Age of Radio: Radio's All Time Greatest Shows
Published in Audio Download by audible.com ()
Average review score:

Great! But Orson Welles is not among the artists here. This is certainly a worthwhile set of tapes for anyone who is interested in or who enjoys listening to old-time radio programs. However, although it is listed among items featuring Orson Welles, those who may be purchasing it in the hope of hearing some of Welles's classic radio dramatizations need to know that Welles is NOT on these tapes.

The Hank Weiscamp Story : The Authorized Biography of the Legendary Colorado Horseman
Published in Paperback by The Lyons Press (July, 2002)
Average review score:

Great inside look at the "Wiescamp horses".Hank Wiescamp ultimately breed some of the greatest horses from four registeries - Quarter, Appalossa, Palomino, and Paint. "The Hank Wiescamp Story" allows the reader to understand how and why Hank made many breeding decisions to create the great "Wiescamp horse". After this book, you too will appreciate what Hank Wiescamp has done to create many of the modern breeds.
Hats off to Hank...... Highly recommend this book for all. Pictures, pedigrees and stories. However, 207 pages could not begin to touch the surface of the 70 years it took to create the "Wiescamp horse".

The Hidden Holmes: His Theory of Torts in History
Published in Hardcover by Harvard Univ Pr (March, 1996)
Average review score:

A Surprisingly Entertaining ReadDrawing on his extensive study of the published and unpublished writings of US Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Harvard Law Professor David Rosenberg challenges widely held beliefs about Holmes' legal stance toward tort law - most specifically his application of negligence and strict liability rules. In the process, Rosenberg criticizes the work of many of his field's most recognized scholars and questions the quality and accuracy of modern legal scholarship in general. While the legal subject matter of this work in itself is a perhaps too technical for the non-lawyer, Rosenberg's pointed criticisms and lucid illustrations make this an entertaining read for anyone who enjoys seeing a free-thinker take on the establishment - and win.

Great LiteratureThis book is a compilation of eight short stories "written" by Dr. Watson after Holmes "retirement." All are set after his capture of Dr. Moriarty.
The first three short stories, aren't that interesting. I found myself knowing the end result way before the end of the story. However, the fourth story "The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans" which concerns a young man working for the British government that ends up dead on the London subway tracks with 7 of the 10 pages of plans for a super secret submarine in his pocket. The other three are missing. Holmes and Watson must find out who killed the young man and where the plans are. This one is not only the best one of the book, but also one of the two longest.
The other great story in the book is The Adventure of the Devil's Foot.
There's also a great historical insight in the book, with a couple of the characters and plot lines surrounding the British conflict with Germany, and one is also set after the beginning of World War I.
I whole heartedly recommend this book to anybody interested in mysteries or great literature.

The Holmes Manuscript: The Lost Dutchman Mine of Jacob Waltz
Published in Paperback by Cowboy Miner Productions (June, 2003)
Average review score:

A must for readers of the Lost Dutchman Mine legendHere it is, the full Holmes manuscript with Glover's annotations, index, and many fascinating photographs. The importance of this document for the Lost Dutchman tale cannot be overemphasized. Aside from the unpublished Bark notes, this is really the only Lost Dutchman account that faithfully traces its origins back to someone who knew Waltz.

Home Landscaping: California Region

Lanscape design in Callifornia for dummiesI borrowed this book from the library first to see if it was any good. I liked it so much I bought it. If you are designing your home gardens from scratch this book is a must have. It helps you design and select plants for around your home. Selecting plants is a snap. I recently moved into a house which needed landscaping and I am using this book to design my backyard space. Well written and concise with plans that are easily translated to your space. This book is not good for looking prants up to see if a particular plant would work in a specfic light situation. Its not an almanac.
